A Richmond News reader questions why grass was planted next to the Steveston Highway multi-use pathway.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Steveston bike path could be extended to No. 5 Road"

I love the new Steveston Highway bike path.

I do, however, question the grass that has been planted along side it. This seems an odd choice considering it will need mowing and watering.

The city is already unable to keep up with mowing during the summer months. This seems like a waste of precious resources.

A better choice would have been an indigenous long grass like the one planted along the sidewalk on the dyke between Gilbert and No. 3 roads. Wooden posts were also installed.

It’s absolutely maintenance-free with no watering or mowing required.

It also provides a bit more of a safety barrier between the bike path users and the cars flying past.
