Dear Editor,
Re: "Historical documents show DDT, arsenic buried at Richmond works yard"
I agree with Mr. Langer's assessment of the Later Chemical site.
The remediation process was led by the Pesticide Control Branch, Environment Ministry, and I can attest to the fact that contaminated soil was buried onsite at the current Works Yard on Lynas Lane.
In fact there is a survey map showing the location of the burial site which I think the Engineering Department is in possession of.
The Ministry of Environment concurred with a consultant report that depositing the contaminated soil at the works yard would be "safe" due to the clay composition of the soil, which was thought to prevent the migration of any contaminants.
The Later Chemical site was eventually dug out and the soil moved to a secure site in Oregon and I can recall the strong chemical odour when the digging occurred.
