Letters: Steveston mural needed better priming

A Richmond News reader thinks the Arrival of the S.V. Titania mural would have lasted longer if the wall had been treated first.

The mural on the side of the Steveston Hotel has been deteriorating and will be removed and possibly painted elsewhere in the future.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Steveston mural to be painted over, possibly relocated"

Nobody asked the city staff to explain why the paint has not failed on the walls next to the mural.

All the areas are equally exposed to the weather and the sunlight.

The mural is painted with oil paint, so the surface needs to be primed very well.

If you touch the mural, you will notice that the oil paint in some areas is applied very thick.

Hence, water penetrates in the surface wherever there is a little crack, then the paint lifts from the surface.

As it was painted in 2017, it has lasted well, but for a longer duration the surface has to be primed two to three times.
