Letters: What is the problem with a safe consumption site?

A Richmond News reader hopes community members can be informed about safe consumption sites.

Richmond City Council's motion about a practicality study on establishing a supervised consumption site at the hospital drew heavy community opposition.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Video: Hundreds gather at Richmond city hall chanting 'no drugs'"

Will one of the protesters against the safe consumption site please explain to me what they are protesting?

The site is to be set up at the hospital — not in a neighbourhood.

People will be bringing their own drugs — not a cost to taxpayers.

There will be people there to counsel the folks who come in — a potential lifesaver.

Again, I have to ask what is the problem?

Please stop responding with a knee-jerk reaction. Please learn the details.

It seems to me that it would take an uncompassionate, uncaring person to think that the possibility of saving lives is worthy of the nonsense that is going on in Richmond right now.

Canada has been and, I hope, will continue to be a country that cares about each other.
