Letters: Why is City of Richmond caring now?

A Richmond News reader and Steveston business owner is taking issue with the city's actions over food trucks in the village

The Shameless Buns food truck is a converted mini bus styled like a Filipino Jeepney. They've been paying rent to park one to two times weekly at Steveston Hub on private property in Richmond.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Food truck fate to be decided by Richmond council,” News, May 17.

I have been a merchant in Steveston for 30 years.

I can assure you city hall has never cared about how many restaurants, hair dressers, registered massage therapist clinics etc. in Steveston have received business licences.

But now, because they have gotten four complaints from, I assume, businesses that are impacted by food trucks, the city feels it can restrict business access to Steveston.

I find the city’s decision to ban the food trucks from Steveston appalling.

I worry what the long term effects will be when the city allows a few businesses to dictate what happens in Steveston.

Either care about all the businesses in Steveston and our livelihoods or allow free enterprise to work the way it should:

The best rise to the occasion and survive.
