Letters: Better to lower speed limit than punish cyclists, e-scooter riders

A Richmond News reader doesn't think police should be out catching "children and little old ladies."

Richmond RCMP cracked down in April 2025 on cyclists and e-scooters riders who were riding on sidewalks.

Dear Editor:

Re: “27 bike and e-scooter riders stopped by Richmond RCMP in two-day blitz"

I'm astonished that our expensive RCMP sleuths are spending their valuable time catching children and little old ladies on e-scooters with no e-helmets.

Or worse yet, riding on sidewalks while trying to avoid being run down by high-speed e-cars hurtling along Richmond's motorways at 80+ kph/h.

Does any of this make any sense at all? What about the drivers in these high-speed four-ton monster e-mobiles? Is anybody concerned about these beasts running over our little old ladies and children who are likely trying to get to school or maybe even simply trying to visit Granny in the care home?

How much did it cost us to mobilize the security forces to go after these blatant e-scoff-laws?

Are we better off after laying the lumber on these little e-people?

We should actually be ashamed of our leaders for having brought us to this backwards state.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just set the speed limit in Richmond to 40 kp/h, do some radar-trapping and let the rest of us putter about on our e-bikes and e-trikes - without bothering us about useless and annoying helmets, please!
