The Editor,
Re: "Wong stands by decision to eat shark fin," News, Oct. 17.
I have been residing in Richmond since 1979, during which time many MPs and MLAs have been elected and served for the people of this beautiful community, we call it Richmond, and their respective constituencies.
I have, however, never ever witnessed such a blatant display of support of a bias business interest as you did during the course of your recent Asia media only event, while stanch advocate of this issue of "shark fin soup" David Chung, of Jade Restaurant standing beside you.
Although, I understand and respect that, just like everyone else in this country, you're, as a citizen of Canada, entitled to have and express your opinion, whatever the subject may be, you are not, however elected to represent the interest of a small business group and speak as though you are their spoke person, (and drink free shark fin soup in front of Chinese media cameras).
But rather, you are elected to represent the people of this community and country.
Moreover, I do not understand what makes you to say during the course of this media event that "the government has no intention of banning the soup". Are you the spoke person of the Canadian government?
To the best of my knowledge and believe, the Government of Canada has not as yet visited this issue and rendered a decision. If it does in the future, you will only have one vote, and your expressed opinion to small local Chinese media will not bind other members of parliament.
Furthermore, since you are elected as an MP to represent the people of Richmond, and you are the member of Canadian Parliament, why would you invite Chinese media only goes beyond me.
Small groups of Chinese restaurant owners are not paying your salary, but the entire taxpayers of this city and Canada.
It would be interesting to find out how much, if any, Mr. Chung had contributed during the course of your last election campaign and whether or not he would do so once again to have you re-elected as a spoke person for his business interest.
I am not sure if our Prime Minister is aware of this incident and what he would say in view of this, in my opinion, unethical and bias media event.
I believe and hope that you would extent and express your apology to the people of Richmond and English and French media, and the best is, you would step down as a MP since you have demonstrated that you have lost your impartial, unbiased representation of your constituency.
