The Editor,

Re: "Wong stands by decision to eat shark fin," News, Oct. 17.

I was terribly saddened to learn of this event. Ms Wong's ethno-centric display of support for an abhorent and illegal practice (the killing of an endangered species only for their fins) was unbelieveable.

She is a public figure, and as our elected MP she is supposed to act at all times as a representative for all cultures/races/creeds residing in Richmond, and speak for all of us in matters that have become a serious regulatory and environmental/sustainabilty concern such as this.

Instead, she chose to act in a self-serving, uncaring manner by participating in an act which is outdated and promotes the continued cruelty to, exploitation and demise of one of one of God's most beautiful and important creations.

Furthermore, as Minister of State for Seniors and a senior herself (one year short of normal retirement age 65), Ms Wong has just disgraced herself and her position by acting without showing the wisdom and high level of care that should go hand in hand with that position.

The right thing to do would have been for Ms Wong to show she is proactive and cares for all people and our planet by being a beacon of change for her culture - by showing or educating that there are other many, many ways to show gratitude and respect than those which put our existence on this earth at risk. Sadly, that did not happen.

Ms Wong's actions call into question whether she is fit to act as our representative by continuing in public office.
