Summer Reading Club book reviews

As part of Summer Reading Club each year, we encourage kids to tell us about the books they’ve been reading. Here are this week’s reviews:
Annie
  1. Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles Book 1) by Colin Meloy
Review by Annie Zhao, age 10

Two brave young friends, Prue and Curtis, undercover a kingdom of secrecy in the midst and turmoil of violent upheaval … a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest of intentions – a wilderness the locals call Wildwood. Thus as they begun on their rescue mission, they found themselves soon entwined in struggle … a struggle for freedom … in Wildwood. I give this book five out of five stars. I like this book because Meloy created various tensions, slowly building up to their main conflict. I specifically liked that because it made me feel unsatisfied after every chapter, because Prue and Curtis were often left in danger or with a big question, yet Wildwood makes a natural page-turner due to that point. Furthermore, a cosmetic reason I enjoyed this book that much is because of the Adventure and Fantasy genre. Thus with that note, in conclusion, I believe this book should be read by ever fan of fiction books.

  1. Real Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham
Review by Muskaan Rana, age 10

This book is about a girl named Shannon. Shannon and Adrienne have been best friends since they were little. One day Adrienne starts hanging out with Jen, the most popular girl in class and the leader of a circle of friends called the group. Everyone in it wants to be Jen’s number 1, and some girls would do anything to stay on top … even if it means bullying the others. I give this book five out of five stars. I like this book because it shows what real friends are. It is really interesting and keeps one’s interest high. I recommend it. The first time I read it, I loved it, and I hope you like it too. I kept reading it because it was so interesting. I probably read it about five times now.

  1. Friday Barnes Under Suspicion by R.A. Spratt
Review by Samanah Nathu, age 11

This book is about a girl detective who encounters a man who leads Friday (the girl) to many more mysteries. In the end, the truth is surprising to her friends at Highcrest Academy. I give this book four and a half stars out of five stars. I like the book because it has many mysteries and is a real page-turner. I like the way that the clues lead to a big, surprising answer. The author really made me stay up all night. I would suggest this book to grades 4-7.
