Henry Yao
Henry Yao was born in Taiwan and is fluent in English and Mandarin. He has lived in Richmond since 11 years of age, graduating from Kingswood Elementary and McNair. He completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
Henry has volunteered at the Richmond Crisis Line, founded the Youth Around the Block organization, and served on the Board of Directors at SFU’s Surrey Salsa Club. In 2004, Henry was diagnosed with two types of lymphoma; with continual support, the cancer went into remission five years later.
After this, Henry decided to pursue youth work to help Richmond’s new generation; associating with organizations including RYSA and the Richmond City Centre community centre, he helped young adults develop life skills and managed various programs.
Honed in this environment, Henry’s leadership style focuses on the value of people and trust-based delegation. From empowering people with various backgrounds to championing democratic processes, his uncompromising principles have helped shape the lives of thousands of youth.
After working with so many talented youth, Henry has decided to help the new generation pave a brighter future; this year, Henry Yao joins the race for Richmond City Council.
