Update: River levels in Richmond could pose risk

The city is asking residents to remain cautious around shorelines.

Richmond residents should also watch for rising river levels and strong water flows as a flood watch has been issued by the River Forecast Centre.

High tide will be at 9:17 a.m. on Sunday. The City of Richmond will be patrolling the dikes from 7 to 11 a.m.

Richmond residents should avoid fast-moving water and unstable riverbanks and be cautious near shorelines, especially with wind and floating debris, the city cautioned.

The wind and rain will continue overnight and the city is also asking resident to clear leaves from drains to help prevent more flooding and secure any loose items.

Earlier today, Blundell Road between Gilbert and Minler roads was closed. The on and off ramps to Highway 91 at No. 6 Road were also closed but have since re-opened.

Furthermore, the 18000 block of McCartney Road was affected earlier today by flooding.

There was also localized flooding in low-lying areas, the city said, either due to blockages in catch basins or over capacity.

Sandbags are available for Richmond residents at the city's works yard at 5599 Lynas Lane.

An atmospheric river has brought heavy rainfall to the Lower Mainland with widespread flooding. Vehicles have gotten stuck in high water with firefighters and tow trucks helping get vehicles and people out of the water.
