It weighs more than 20 pounds and fills the room with the sweet aroma of French chocolate.

A magnificent hand-carved replica of the World Cup of soccer arrived in Steveston on Tuesday morning.

Chocolatier Dominique Jarry hastily removed his creation from the back of his SUV and carried into the air-conditioned confines of its home for the next five weeks, the Buck & Ear pub in Steveston.

As part of Steveston’s “World Cup Village” celebrations, the fine chocolate version of the famous trophy will be on show in the Buck inside a glass case throughout the World Cup, which kicks off in Brazil on June 12.

Jarry has spent between four and six hours every day for the last week carving the cup from more than 17 pounds of high quality French dark, white and milk chocolate.

“I really like it; the hands and the words were the most difficult part,” said Jarry, who’s created buildings, logos and even a coffin out of chocolate in his near 40 years as a chocolatier.

Buck & Ear manager Gennesse Langdon has promised Jarry she’ll take good care of his masterpiece during the World Cup, for which 32 Steveston businesses have adopted one of the 32 nations competing in the competition and are already decorating their front windows accordingly.

Richmond’s “Man in Motion” Rick Hansen will be on hand at the World Cup Village’s final day party to crack the chocolate trophy with a hammer. After which, everyone is invited to tuck into a piece of Jarry’s fabulous creation.
