Richmond RCMP targeted illegal ride-hailing operators and speeders during May.

Police saw an increase in traffic tickets and fines in May after targeting speeders and illegal ride-hailing.

According to Richmond RCMP's monthly road report issued Tuesday, police issued 914 traffic tickets last month, including 835 tickets for violating the Motor Vehicle Act.

The number of speeding tickets, 257, was a 77 per cent jump from the 145 tickets issued in April due to enhanced enforcement for High Risk Driving and Speed Awareness Month throughout the month of May.

Police also targeted illegal ride-hailing operators in May by having officers book rides using unlicensed ride-hailing apps.

The joint operation, held by Richmond RCMP's Road Safety Unit in partnership with the Passenger Transportation Branch, took place on May 28 and resulted in fines adding up to $12,950 plus towing and inspection fees.

Of the six drivers stopped by officers, four were repeat offenders, according to Richmond RCMP.

Other tickets issued include 150 for driver licence infractions, 26 for impaired driving, 96 for distracted driving and 128 for intersection and moving violations, which were consistent with April's numbers.

The monthly report also identified four high collision zones, namely: No. 4 Road and Steveston Highway, Grant McConachie and Russ Baker ways, Bridgeport Road and Great Canadian Way, as well as Bridgeport Road and Sea Island Way.
