West Vancouver police have renewed their call for information to help find a missing kayaker.

The West Vancouver Police Department has now released the name of the missing man, Dzmitry (Dima) Aliaksandrau, and additional details about his disappearance, after an initial plea was made on Nov. 20.

On Nov. 19, Aliaksandrau – a 36-year-old man from Maple Ridge – left Batchelor Bay near Whytecliff Park in a white collapsible kayak at around 12:08 p.m., police said in a statement. That day, a “bomb cyclone” event brought strong winds to the region.

Cellphone video captured by a witness nearby shows him heading southbound near Bird Islet at around 12:45 p.m.

In the background of the video, a BC Ferries vessel can be seen that was scheduled to leave Departure Bay in Nanaimo at 10:40 a.m. and arrived at Horseshoe Bay at approximately 12:45 p.m., police said.

Aliaksandrau is five foot ten, 170 pounds (77 kilograms) and has dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black rain jacket, black track pants and black flip flops.

The photo provided by police shows him just before his departure in the kayak, police said.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the West Vancouver Police Department at 604-925-7300.
