6 things to do in Richmond this Remembrance Day weekend

The Remembrance Day long weekend is upon us, and Richmondites will finally get to return to an in-person service to honour the fallen.

From the Remembrance Day ceremony at City Hall to craft workshops and field lacrosse tournaments, here are some of the activities you might want to check out this weekend.

1. Remembrance Day Ceremony

The annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph by Richmond City Hall has finally returned to in-person after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Around 850 to 900 people are expected to participate in the parade, and a wreath will be laid in memory of fallen RCMP officer and Richmond resident Const. Shaelyn Yang. The event will be livestreamed and some Richmond roads will be closed temporarily.

Date and time: Friday, Nov. 11, 2022 (10:20 to 11 a.m., roads closed from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)

Place: Richmond Cenotaph on the east side of City Hall at 6911 No. 3 Rd.

2. Annual Richmond Romp Field Lacrosse Tournament

The Richmond Lacrosse Association's annual field lacrosse tournament is happening this weekend. A total of 97 games will be played across four days, with 42 teams participating. The first games will begin on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The schedule and details for the tournament can be found on the Richmond Lacrosse Association's website.

Date: Nov. 10 to 13, 2022

Places: Minoru Park fields at 7171 Granville Ave. and Richmond High School Field at 7191 Minoru Blvd.

3. Learn how to make a Ukrainian doll for charity

Vancouver-based non-profit Ukrainian Blue Yellow Art is holding a workshop in Richmond for making a Ukrainian traditional knotted doll called Montaka. Participants will learn how to make a Princess Montaka doll, with a head decorated with ribbons, braids and handmade flowers. All materials will be provided but participants can also bring their own fabrics. There is a participation fee of $50, which will be donated to the Come Back Alive Foundation. 4. Shoreline cleanup with Dharma Drum Vancouver for Young People

Clean up Richmond's shoreline and learn about Chan Buddhism at a volunteering opportunity organized by Dharma Drum Vancouver. The event is limited to individuals between the ages 16 to 40, and those interested can sign up with an online form.

5. Celebrate a Richmond artist's first comic book release at Fuggles Beer

A Richmond artist is holding a release party at Fuggles Beer to celebrate the release of his first comic book, which features a craft beer superhero. Participants will get to check out the comic, get their copies signed and enjoy great beer and fun company.

6. Catch the end of Aspire Richmond's exhibition at City Hall

Aspire Richmond's WE exhibition will be coming to a close on Monday, Nov. 14. Installed for Community Living Month, the exhibition features works of participants of Aspire's day programs and encourages viewers to see the world through someon else's eyes.
