Richmond RCMP is working with Canadian Tire in Ironwood to etch VINs onto catalytic converters this weekend for free to curb thefts.

Richmond RCMP is hosting a free event this weekend to help Richmond car owners deter catalytic converter thieves.

A catalytic converter etching event on Saturday April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is being held at Canadian Tire at Ironwood Plaza as part of Auto Crime Enforcement Month.

Catalytic converter etching is when a vehicle's identification number (VIN) is engraved or marked onto the catalytic converter.

Etchings can help authorities identify stolen converters, making them harder for thieves to sell if stolen.

This process is often part of a regular service appointment, but the Richmond RCMP invites the public to attend on a first-come, first-served basis without needing to book an appointment.

Richmond RCMP and community policing volunteers will be at the event to share tips on preventing auto crime. They'll also be holding a raffle for a safety kit from ICBC.

Police launched the "You Etch It. We Catch It" program in 2024 with the help of the City of Richmond, ICBC and local garages.

For more information on the program, contact Richmond RCMP Crime Prevention Unit at 604-278-1212 or by email at [email protected]
