Richmond residents have raised concerns over an odour in the city this past week.

An odour many Richmond residents have described as "foul" and "noxious" has been lingering in the city's neighbourhoods this past week and has garnered 70 complaints to Metro Vancouver.

Residents reported to the Richmond News of the smell coming from Steveston, west Richmond and some even said in east Richmond.

Julie Saxton, air quality regulation program manager at Metro Vancouver, said they are aware of the odours being reported in the Richmond area and are investigating it.

The regional utility management company received more than 70 odour complaints last week, with fewer complaints over the weekend.

Metro Vancouver staff were in the field in Richmond from Thursday through Sunday to assess the reported odours basesd on information from residents.

"Officers detected odour while out in the field on Thursday and Friday, but not over the weekend," said Saxton.

"We have not yet identified the source and will continue to assess the situation."
