Central Richmond has a flourishing farm market of locally grown produce, thanks to an ambitious community program from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU).
Food security is often the subject of media, but KPU is actually doing something specific to enhance local food production.
When I attended, a steady stream of loyal customers braved the rain to buy farm fresh vegetables, French bakery treats and other delicious consumables.
The market is staffed by student farmers who are earning a bachelor’s degree in the KPU’s Department of Sustainable Agriculture and Farm School programs. Other vendors can also apply to set up booths.
The students learn hands-on organic farming techniques at the KPU section of the Garden City Lands.
The farm market provides KPU students with the opportunity of acquiring the business skills needed to own and operate a small farm — which may grow into a larger farm.
Purchases from this market support the KPU farm activities.
The market itself is diverse, with live entertainment, chef demonstrations and children’s workshops.
Home gardeners can also apply to sell vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers at the market. The market collects 15 per cent of total sales from these vendors.
All fees collected go to the Kwantlen Students’ Association for their student food bank. This food bank provides emergency food relief to eligible students.
The market continues on Tuesdays with the last date this year being Nov. 12.
