Out and About: Oldest church in Richmond dates back to 1891

Minoru Chapel was originally a Methodist church and was built by volunteers.

One of the jewels in Minoru park is the Minoru Chapel. Built in 1891 with volunteer labour from the local Methodist Congregation, it was originally located at Cambie and River roads.

The structure was moved to its current location in the 1960s.

In 1968 it was re-dedicated and re-consecrated as Richmond Minoru Chapel and is now for the use of all denominations.

The picturesque Chapel is officially registered as one of Canada’s Historic Places. It is the oldest, still standing church building in Richmond.

It remains a place of tranquility.

The Chapel is a popular venue for weddings and renewal of marriage vows.

The wood frame building is located on the west side of Minoru Park in central Richmond, 6540 Gilbert Rd. (Just behind and slightly south of Richmond General Hospital.)

The well-kept grounds around the Chapel — and the Chapel itself — are ideal for photography, especially when the flowers are in bloom — and the rabbits are grazing!

The inside of the Chapel is locked for security reasons and is primarily open for weddings, other pre-booked events and special occasions.

The Chapel can be booked for weddings and other events through The Chapel Group website.

The Chapel can be contacted by phone at 604-688-0770 or by email at [email protected].
