Police are encouraging residents to register their bikes at two upcoming in-person events to help combat bike theft.
On July 17 and Aug. 14, Richmond RCMP will set up a Project 529 bike registration booth at the Concert in the Plaza event at the Minoru Centre for Active Living.
Registration for the initiative is free and bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters are welcome.
The initiative makes it easier for police to identify and recover stolen bikes, said Richmond RCMP.
Community members can also register on the smartphone app or seek assistance at the City Centre Community Policing Office at 6931 Granville Ave.
Decals are available for pickup at the Richmond RCMP detachment at 11411 No. 5 Rd. for community members who would like to self-register.
Police data show reported bike thefts increased from 244 to 283 from 2021 to 2022, but dropped to 253 in 2023. As of May 25, 2024, Richmond RCMP has received 66 reports of bike theft this year so far. Bikes valued under $5,000 are involved in 99 per cent of the reports, according to police.
