Out and About: The dogs of Richmond

Tips on how to best take photos of our canine friends.

They come in all colours, shapes and sizes. Treated properly, they are a human’s best friend.

And Richmond has a broad spectrum of dogs, from Mastiffs to Maltese.

Dog walkers are everywhere in our city.

The Steveston boardwalk is a great location for viewing dogs and their guardians, especially on weekends. Ditto the dykes and the Britannia area.

Richmond has an abundance of dog walking areas. Garry Point Park offers scenic views for walking dogs as well as taking photographs.

McDonald Beach is ideal as an off-leash area for giving dogs more exercise.

And dog parks are available throughout our city for exercise and socialization.

All of these options feature a wide range of canines, but if you want to take photographs of the dogs, you need to move quickly with your camera to capture the action — and avoid collisions from the running dogs in off-leash areas.

Dog owners generally are proud of their charges and most will be happy to pose with their pets when politely asked.

Probably the best strategy for photographers is to find a comfortable bench with good sight lines.

Pick a fast shutter speed (1/500 for starters) if your camera has this option and be ready with your finger on the shutter button.

For those who are dog-less but interested in guardianship, our local SPCA usually has a good variety of dogs needing homes.
