The Steveston Icebreaker 8K and kids 1K are also fundraisers for KidSport. The charity is holding its annual gala on Feb. 28.

Athlete ambassadors from different sports will gather in Richmond next week to support kids who can't afford sports registration fees.

KidSport Richmond is hosting its annual Creating Community Champions Gala on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Executive Hotel Vancouver Airport.

It is the main fundraiser for a program that provided nearly $165,000 last year to help 506 Richmond kids experience the joys of playing a season of sports.

Eligible families can receive up to $400 per child, aged 18 and under, through KidSport to help with sign-up fees to play sports registered with Sport BC.

Richmond Olympic medallist Evan Dunfee, who is also a KidSport Richmond board member, describe sports as an "incredible arena" for individuals to learn about being a team player, time management and setting goals.

"I am the person I am today because of the lessons sport has taught me," he said.

Sports is where kids learn to "fail, pick ourselves up and continue to strive toward our goals," he added.

"KidSport is there to make sure every kid, regardless of their financial situation gets the chance to play sport, make lifelong friends and learn those lessons."

Next Friday's dinner gala will include athlete ambassadors who are Olympic champions, Grey Cup winners, Hall of Fame recipients, Canucks alumni and more.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28. The event takes place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m at the Executive Hotel Vancouver Airport, 7311 Westminster Hwy.

Sponsored tables start from $2,800 and individual tickets at $310.
