Richmond mom, son kick off One Bag Challenge to clean up city

Richmondite Kate-Marie Harvey was proud to see an old friend from Nova Scotia making the TV news after kicking off a challenge to pick up garbage in his neighbourhood and province during the pandemic.

But Harvey was surprised to learn that nobody from B.C. had joined the Facebook group or even started up their own “One Bag Challenge,” whereby you collect a bag of garbage and then nominate three people outside of the group to do the same.

So, Harvey, who is six months pregnant, decided to create her own Facebook group in B.C. and set off Thursday evening in Richmond with her eight-year-old son and husband to fill their bags full of garbage.

“The hope was that it created a snowball effect. And that’s what happened in Nova Scotia,” explained Harvey, who added that the Nova Scotia group now has almost 900 members.

“I saw a lot of people recently on social media complaining about masks and gloves being littered everywhere.

“People have a lot of spare time right now and Richmond and B.C. has no shortage of garbage.”

Richmond News readers may recall Harvey – who was working part-time in a hair salon and a part-time student before the pandemic - making front page news in January, appealing for blanket donations to help koalas during Australia’s horrendous wildfires.
