A Richmond non-profit organization is hosting a book drive to support Merritt Central Elementary School as it continues to recover from the flood disaster last year.
Monic Charity Foundation is looking to donate as many books as possible to help the school's library, which was greatly impacted by the floods.
The book drive is looking for books that are fiction, non-fiction and any educational genres for kids from Kindergarten to Grade 7.
Stanley Ho, a director with Monic Charity Foundation, said the book drive also aims to raise public awareness and aid for Merritt as well as overall awareness for natural disaster preparation.
"The library at the school was one of the most impacted sections of the school and 30 to 40 per cent of the books in the library were damaged and not reusable," said Ho.
"The library is an integral part of learning for kids and we want to make sure we can help to the best of our ability during this time."
Ho told the Richmond News that the book drive will also remind the Richmond community of the importance of "togetherness."
"When individuals are not in an environment of seeing people and meeting people, they will get used to not having a sense of community. This is an environment that I feel COVID-19 has put the city in," he said.
"This is a good reminder that there are people in need and I personally think we're very privileged to be able to have events like this to help others to build that sense of togetherness and community while making an impact."
The book drive will be held until Apr. 30.
Books can be dropped off at Monic Charity Foundation's office or the public can request book pick-ups if they are donating more than 10 books.
