Richmond's 'Flower Lady' makes community the star of first flower show

Floral display entries are still open for the August exhibition.

A floral arrangement exhibition is coming to Richmond next month, and it's organized by none other than the city's very own "Flower Lady."

Known for her community workshops bringing people together with flower power, Jane Lee's latest project is a free flower exhibition aiming to spread positivity and hope.

Titled "Blossom of Hope," the exhibition will take place from Aug. 24 to 25 and feature floral designs inspired by iconic Bible stories such as Noah's Ark and quotes by notable individuals such as Princess Diana, Saint Teresa and Steve Jobs.

"The upcoming flower exhibition is actually a great platform for all people to get together and experience a new way of building community spirit in an artistic way," Lee explained.

Local non-profits and charities are also invited to create floral designs to showcase their work at the exhibition, including Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives' (RCRG) caregiver hub.

Creations by community members such as local seniors from daycares and assisted living homes will be displayed as well.

"Honestly not many pros will be present at our exhibition, but that's exactly our point of having the most humble communities to play a part in something that traditionally only the pros will do," Lee told the Richmond News.

"Isn't it the encouragement, the positive spirit that we constantly looking for?"

The exhibition is organized by Ave Maria Garden, a non-profit Lee started in 2024.

Ave Maria Garden shares the same name as the non-profit Lee founded in Hong Kong back in 2017, which began as a series of community workshops. Lee moved to Canada in 2019 and began organizing community events such as flower arrangement workshops, Valentine's flowers for those in need and a Canada Day celebration.

Inspired by the community spirit around her, Lee decided to formally incorporate Ave Maria Garden as a non-profit in Canada earlier this year.

The non-profit offers flower design workshops for Richmond seniors and it also recently organized a team-building activity for teachers and staff at a Vancouver school. Next on the horizon is Chinatown, Lee added.

"Our mission is to use our skills to serve and support communities with a grateful heart, proving that nothing is impossible," said Lee.

"We've had the privilege of supporting individuals with mental health challenges, and seeing their smiles at our workshops is the greatest reward."

The Blossom of Hope exhibition will be held from Aug. 24 to 25 at the Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church on 5771 Granville Ave. For more information about Ave Maria Garden, click here.
