The first baby born at Richmond Hospital in 2025 came fast – and didn’t stay long at the hospital.

Ayato Sudo was born at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, just 30 minutes after his mother arrived at the hospital.

Asuka Sudo, who delivered Richmond’s baby of 2025, said just after eight hours, mom and baby were found to be in “perfect” shape and the family decided to spend a traditional Japanese New Year’s Day together at home.

This included a having special traditional New Year’s meal, Osechi, prepared by Asuka’s mother who is here from Japan for a month to help out.

Ayato has a four-year-old brother, Taiga, who Asuka said has been very helpful since the newborn arrived home.

“He loves his baby brother,” she said. “He says ‘he’s so cute, (look at his) little feet, little hands.’”

And big brother Taiga has been helping mom since Ayato came home, fetching things when she needs them and comforting the baby when he cries.

And father Kenji has been “supporting” Asuka as they've welcomed the new addition to the family.

Ayato, which means “catch the first star,” came about six days before his due date.

Asuka praised Richmond Hospital staff for their work – this was her second delivery at the local hospital.

“It was so smooth,” she said of the delivery. “The nurses were great and very supportive. Everyone at the hospital was so good.”
