Seven things to do in Richmond this weekend

Saturday, Oct. 15 is the General Voting Day for Richmond's civic elections.

With the municipal elections tomorrow and Halloween slowly approaching, there is an abundance of options for a productive weekend in Richmond.

To help our readers kick off their weekend, we've compiled a list of seven activities you might want to check out.

1. Vote in the civic election

Get in your vote on General Voting Day at your designated voting place. To learn more about the candidates, check out our mayoral and city council candidate profiles, a chart of where council candidates stand on key issues and this brief survey of school trustee candidates. Date and time: Oct. 15, 2022, polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

2. Join Birds Canada's free bird walk and workshop 

Birds Canada and Garden City Conservation Society are holding a free bird walk and workshop for making homes bird-friendly this Saturday. The walk will be led by Kris Cu and start at 8 a.m. and the workshop will be held at the Birdhouse near Paulik Park afterwards. Participants will receive a cedar chickadee birdhouse and a native plant.

Attendance is limited to 20 persons and registration is required.

Date and time: Oct. 15, 2022, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Place: Terra Nova Rural Park

3. Get poetry tips and reflect on the meaning of home at RPL's workshop

Local poet and advocate Alan Hill will be leading a poetry-writing workshop at Richmond Public Library's (RPL) Brighouse branch on Saturday. The workshop is part of RPL's Homeless Action Week programming and participants will be drawing inspiration from photographs capturing the meaning of "home" on display on the Community Art Wall.

Date and time: Oct. 15, 2022, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Place: Brighouse Library

4. Free Richmond Culture Days activities

This weekend is the last chance to take part in free Culture Days activities before the annual event wraps up. Some activities include:

  • Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra's open rehearsals. (Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.)

  • Make Chinese incense products at JJW Aromas Studios' XIANG OF CHINA experience. (Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

  • Hajj: The Journey Through Art, a cross-cultural art exhibition showcasing a dialogue between "Aboriginal handmade and Muslim hand-craft works of art." (Oct. 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • Arts Market by Arts BC, Richmond Arts Coalition and Community Arts Council of Richmond. (Oct. 16, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

  • Dance as Meditation, a gentle movement class taught by 2022 Branscombe House Artist-in-Residence Krystal Kiran. (Oct. 16, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

  • Create art at local artist Bobby Rangari's home studio in Steveston. (Oct. 16, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) 

5. Learn about different cultures at the Canadian Culture Children's Festival

The family-friendly festival will have music, free food, entertainment, educational booths and virtual games and it aims to build cohesion between families in different cultural communities.

Date and time: Oct. 16, 2022, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Place: Richmond Olympic Experience Museum

6. Visit Richmond Country Farms' pumpkin patch

Get a pumpkin, enjoy live music, hay wagon rides and meet animals at Richmond Country Farms' pumpkin patch. The pumpkin patch is open until Oct. 31 and tickets are available online and at the door.

Date: Oct. 1 to 31, 2022, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

7. Check out the Gulf of Georgia Cannery's annual Halloween installation

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site's annual Halloween installation is back starting from Oct. 15. The Haunted Sea installation features colourful creatures and aquatic displays created from upcycled materials and is suitable for kids of all ages.
