A well-loved community cupboard filled with food in Steveston, meant to help those with food insecurity, has moved to a new home.
The Steveston Community Cupboard has moved into the lobby of the Steveston Hub at the corner of Moncton Street and Second Avenue.
The cupboard was initially a well-intentioned project started by a student from McMath secondary's Incentive Program in 2021 to help those struggling with food insecurity.
It was built and called the village's Best of British Store on First Avenue and Chatham Street its home for the past three years.
In September, the cupboard was closed after Best of British co-owner Lenny Entwistle, who keeps an eye on the bright red box, found it in an "absolutely filthy" state with spilled food, items half-opened and sticky shelves.
The cupboard is now up and running inside the Steveston Hub and community members are welcome to drop off unopened, non-perishable goods and for those in need to come and take what they really need.
The Steveston Hub is at 3551 Moncton St.
