Non-profit brings Indian classical dance to Richmond

Five distinct styles of Indian classical dance will be performed at Richmond Cultural Centre's Performance Hall.

An Indo-Canadian non-profit is sharing the art of Indian dance in Richmond this weekend.

Vancouver-based Society of Indo-Canadian Performing Arts BC (SINCArts BC) is hosting a one-day celebration, Natyanjali, this Saturday (March 15) to showcase artists performing Indian classical music and dance.

Natyanjali, which means an "an offering of dance," is an Indian tradition where people celebrate the art of Indian classical dance in honour of Lord Nataraja.

Nataraja is a depiction of the Hindu god Shiva as the cosmic dancer. Shiva is a revered icon in Indian art and culture that represents the cyclical nature of creation and destruction, explained Aditi Chaudhury, founder and director of SINCArts BC.

Chaudhury said the organization focuses on providing a platform for emerging and established artists while "fostering appreciation for these rich traditions."

The five dance forms being featured at the event will be Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathak and Mohiniyattam.

“Natyanjali is more than a performance; it is a spiritual journey where dance becomes prayer,” said Chaudhury.

The event will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Richmond Cultural Centre's Performance Hall.

The Richmond performance is already sold out, but SINCArts BC hosts a monthly community meet-up called Adavu Mosaic that is designed for all levels of dancers to practice, create and share stories about dance.
