A team of local Japanese Canadian and Indigenous artists are creating seven different prints with an industrial-size construction steamroller in Steveston for Labour Day weekend.
Big Print Steveston will feature a series of four by eight-foot prints being pulled from the pavement with construction equipment in a parking lot on Imperial Landing.
Woodblocks for the event were created during a special wood carving demonstration during the Steveston Salmon Festival. The prints are designed and cut by artists Mariko Ando, Dona Nabata, Atheana Picha, Kinichi Shigeno, Debra Sparrow, Cyler Sparrow-Point/ Isaiah Sparrow and Richard Tetrault/ Gerald Pedros.
The event will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 to 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. The final prints, along with prints from previous projects, will be displayed at 100-4300 Bayview Street by the Steveston Harbour Pier.
Big Print Steveston is presented by the Creative Cultural Collaborations Society (C3 Society) and a previous iteration of this project was held in Chinatown back in 2016.
