Richmond is calling for B.C. artists to submit artwork proposals for its new animal shelter facility that will open in the coming weeks.

A budget of $44,000 from the Richmond Community Animal Shelter construction project is being put aside for a public art installation at the facility.

One per cent of the construction budget for the shelter at 12071 No. 5 Rd. was allocated for public artwork at the beginning of the project.

According to a city report, $35,000 will be used for the artwork including design, production, fabrication, taxes and other costs, and $9,000 will be used to install and maintain the public art.

Artists from B.C. will be allowed to propose an artwork to be created on a new fence or on a pre-built fence which will face the east side of the site and the main street on No. 5 Road.

Once a proposal has been selected, it will be forwarded to council for endorsement in the fall of 2022 with an anticipated design and installation of the artwork in March 2023.

However, the artist and design proposals will not be selected until the animal shelter is completed, which should be soon.

The shelter is nearing completion and is anticipated to open in the “coming weeks,” according to Clay Adams, spokesperson for the City of Richmond.

Adams added that the public will be welcomed to the new facility for an open house before the shelter officially opens for operation.

Submission deadline is July 11 with finalists to be contacted on July 21.
