This is part of a series called “Richmond under Construction” highlighting development in the city.
The foundations for two new hotels in Richmond's Bridgeport neighbourhood are taking shape.
The Bridgeport Residence Inn and Courtyard Hotels are Chunghwa Hotel Group's latest projects on Jow Street, between Bridgeport and Beckwith roads, and Highway 99 to the west.
When fully built out, there will be approximately 300 hotel rooms totalling 192,564 square feet between the two hotels, which are 10 and 12 storeys each.
There will also be a business centre and an office building on the lot.
A building permit was issued in March 2022 for the first hotel and a second one was issued in February 2023 with a combined construction value of $94.3 million, according to a city staff report.
The project is on a property identified as an environmentally sensitive area and during recent construction work, 22 trees have died on the lot.
Developers have proposed 31 new trees - 17 on Jow Street and 14 on Beckwith Road - to be planted in similar locations to the original trees as compensation.
