Richmond police caught 30 impaired drivers in December.

Thirty drivers were caught driving while impaired in Richmond during the month of December, according to RCMP, and this included nine on New Year’s Eve alone.

The RCMP road safety unit issued 810 traffic tickets in December. There were 75 charges for distracted driving and 149 speeding tickets.

Richmond RCMP are reminding drivers to adjust their driving to changing weather conditions.

It’s a legal requirement for drivers to fully clear snow and ice from their vehicles before driving, RCMP noted, and failure to do so can pose serious risks and could result in penalties.

Sgt. Eric Baskette with the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit said impaired driving and pedestrian safety remain “serious concerns” for police.

“By planning ahead and driving cautiously, we can all play a role in saving lives,” he added.

RCMP safety tips

  • Plan your ride home using public transportation, ride-hailing apps or designated sober drivers.
  • Speak up. If you see someone about to drive impaired, help them find a safe way home.
  • Be vigilant. Report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
