Update: Nine areas in Richmond are still experiencing power outages as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, adding up to more than 4,000 homes customers. The cause of outages is wind storm, according to BC Hydro.
According to the outage map, 2,210 homes south of Williams Rd around Steveston Hwy had lost power around 10 p.m. and 1,652 homes west of Hwy 91 and north of Westminster Hwy lost power at around 9:30 p.m.
A total of 26 outages were listed on the outage map at 11 p.m. on Friday night.
A wind warning was in effect for Richmond as northwesterly winds 70 gusting to 90 km/h had developed earlier in the evening.
Environment Canada warned of potential damage to buildings, loose objects tossed by the winds, power outages and fallen tree branches. Winds are expected to ease overnight.
An update from BC Hydro states that about 330,000 homes were left without power last night across Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland. And as of 6:30 a.m. this morning, 145,000 homes still have no power.
"The hardest hit areas are Surrey, Abbotsford, Burnaby and Nanaimo," reads the release.
According to the release, BC Hydro expects clean-up work to continue throughout the day, and repair work could continue into tomorrow due to extensive damage.
