Community members hoping to learn more about Richmond's outdoors will get to participate in a free bike tour next weekend.
The City of Richmond is bringing back the "Island City, by Bike" tour on June 9, where community members will get to explore the city with the help of knowledgeable tour guides.
Now in its 22nd iteration, the tour welcomes all cyclists, solo or not. Two routes will be available, both starting and ending at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site at 5180 Westwater Drive.
The extended, 25-kilometre, route will start at 10 a.m. and include on and off-street biking. The ride will cover South Dyke Trail, Steveston Highway multi-use pathway, Shell Road Trail, Ash Street Neighbourhood Bikeway, Garden City Road, Capstan Way, Middle Arm Dyke Trail and the Railway Greenway.
The short route, at eight kilometres, will start at 11 a.m. and take about one hour. The ride, which also includes on and off-street biking, will cover the South Dyke Trail, Princess Lane Trail, No. 2 Road multi-use pathway, Kittiwake Drive, McMath trail, a portion of Crabapple Ridge Neighbourhood Bikeway and Steveston Imperial Landing.
Pre-ride bike and helmet safety checks are available before the tours at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. and Richmond RCMP will also onsite promoting bike registration, which is a part of its anti-theft initiative.
Those interested in e-scooters and e-bikes can also learn more from onsite Richmond's pilot e-scooter program ambassadors.
The tours will wrap up around 12:30 p.m. with a BBQ party, where participants can reconvene at the Britannia Shipyards to enjoy a meal, refreshments and draws for raffle prizes.
Parking is available at the Britannia Shipyards gravel parking lot or along Westwater Drive.
