Canadian flags fly across Steveston on Flag Day

Richmond residents fly Canadian flags in response to tariff threats from the U.S.

Canadian flags were seen flying in the Village of Steveston on Saturday, the 60th anniversary of the launching of the maple leaf-emblazoned national symbol.

After the threat of steep tariffs against Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump, and references by him to make Canada the 51st state of America, there's been a rising sense of patriotism among Canadians.

On Feb. 15, 1965, the maple leaf flag replaced the Red Ensign as the national flag of Canada.

While Flag Day hasn't been celebrated with much fanfare since being declared by Prime Minister Jean Chretien in 1996, this year five former prime ministers, including Chretien, called for an expression of patriotism on Saturday.

Steveston residents joined others across Canada to fly flags on Saturday.
