Three new child care centres will be built next to Richmond schools – two at public schools and one at a private school.

The standalone modular buildings are expected to be installed by summer 2023, and will add 140 new child care spots in Richmond.

Manoah Steves elementary and Maple Lane elementary will each get 50 new child care spaces in a building located on school grounds.

The new child care centre at the Richmond Jewish Day School will have 40 spots.

The child care centres are being paid for jointly by the provincial and federal governments and are given out through ChildCareBC.

In the meantime, the province said its recruitment and retention strategy includes doubling the number of spots in post-secondary to train new early-childhood educators.

Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside was at Maple Lane elementary on Thursday to make the announcement.
