The Richmond Food Bank will be handing out pre-packaged hampers and cancelling their offsite distribution in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
As of Monday, instead of allowing clients to choose what food they want, everything will be ready packaged for pickup.
With the public health crisis evolving, the food bank is expecting more low-income people to need their services.
They are appealing to the public to donate food, money and their time.
“The Richmond Food Bank is committed to providing healthy and nutritious food to our neighbours in need. Our community’s continued support means so much more especially now, as we work through these uncertain times,” said Hajira Hussain, executive director of the Richmond Food Bank Society.
Pickup hours from Monday to Saturday will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but grocery distribution at their offsite depots – Steveston United Depot, Peace Mennonite Depot and Baptist Church Depot – as well as their Thursday evening distribution are cancelled until further notice.
Richmond Food Bank is asking volunteers to help pack hampers and sort food, but they are also appealing for monetary and food donations.
Most needed food items are rice, pasta, pasta sauce, canned milk, canned fruits and vegetables and canned beans. Food donations can be dropped off at the Richmond Food Bank, located at
at #100-5800 Cedarbridge Way.
More than 1,700 Richmond residents access the weekly food bank distribution.
