Some campaign signs in Richmond have been moved around and tampered with – something forbidden under the Canada Elections Act – just two weeks before Richmond residents head to the polls to elect two members of Parliament.
Election signs for two Steveston-Richmond East candidates – the NDP’s Jack Trovato and the Conservative candidate Kenny Chiu - were placed around a basketball court at a local school.
The placement of the signs on school grounds was pointed out to the Richmond News by Colleen Glynn, who is working on Trovato’s election campaign.
Glynn said she would report the incident to Elections Canada.
“Would you remind your readers that signs are not to be tampered with? Especially moving them to areas where they are expressly forbidden to be,” Glynn said in an email to the News.
Another Richmond resident posted on social media that their yard sign supporting Trovato was damaged and then thrown into a ditch.
According to RCMP, it’s a criminal offence to tamper with election signs.
The federal election is on Monday, Sept. 20.
