The flag of the Philippines was raised at Richmond City Hall this weekend.

The Philippine flag was raised at Richmond City Hall this past Saturday to mark that country’s 126th Independence Day as well as 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Philippines.

In 2018, the federal government declared June as Filipino Heritage Month.

This was the 10th year that the flag was raised at Richmond City Hall. This year, the ceremony was attended by Acting Mayor Andy Hobbs as well as Mable Elmore, MLA for Vancouver Kensington, who is of Filipino descent.

The event was led by Philippine Consul General Arlene Magno, who hoisted the Philippine flag.

The event program included cultural presentations, regional dances and songs.

The event was made possible through the efforts of the Multicultural Helping House Society, Richmond Bayanihan Society, MHHS Richmond 55+ SERS, the Richmond School District and several other community organizations and individuals.

In Richmond, there are 13,205 people who speak some Tagalog, the main language of the Philippines, according to Statistics Canada.
