Letters: Cancellation of Richmond supportive housing 'brutally ironic'

Richmond News reader says many athletes at Invictus Games also struggled with mental health issues and addiction.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Update: Richmond mayor announces ‘termination’ of Cambie and Sexsmith supportive housing"

Richmond city council's announcement to halt the Sexsmith supportive housing project is brutally ironic.

I guess they, and the other NIMBY Richmond folks, have been missing the amazing Invictus Games currently being held in Vancouver/Whistler.

If you listen to the stories of these veterans and active service members, you will quickly realize that they could easily be part of the homeless in cities like Richmond. With support from their communities they are here to celebrate rising above the darkest times of their lives.

Many dealt with mental illness and addictions. For many the battle is ongoing.

But the Invictus folks cared about them and got them help.

Where is the City of Richmond's leadership in extending similar support and compassion to our homeless?

Quit looking to the province to solve it; it's our problem to spearhead a solution to!
