The year of the dragon is fast approaching as we bid the rabbit farewell.
Feb. 10 will mark the first day of Lunar New Year and dragon-themed festive decorations have already started popping up around Richmond.
Legends said the dragon finished fifth in "the Great Race" to select the 12 zodiac animals, arriving later than expected because it took a detour to help villagers put out a fire. He also helped a tiny rabbit get to the shore when he saw it struggling in the river.
Dragons are described as benevolent and ambitious rulers with lofty ideals, according to a Chinese New Year website. They are loved by many and enjoy companionship but are independent and may find it difficult to return affection.
Their strengths lie in their upright character, confidence and courage, while their weaknesses include being temperamental, domineering and self-centred.
This year will be the year of the Wood Dragon. Wood dragons are known for being intelligent and attractive with an ability to make good use of their environment. Their financial fortunes often come "enviably quickly" but they may not be as lucky in relationships due to their "fiery temper."
In Chinese culture, one's zodiac birth year is considered unlucky and many choose to wear red items to ward off bad luck.
According to the website, the best careers for those born in the year of the dragon include art, politics, academia and business, while the worst careers are in the military, customer support and information technology.
