A bill put forward on Wednesday could help recognize and celebrate B.C.'s cultural diversity, says a Richmond MLA.
Henry Yao, BC NDP MLA for Richmond South-Centre, is asking the province to officially acknowledge and commemorate Lunar New Year through his proposed legislation.
The bill also seeks to establish the month beginning on Lunar New Year as the "Lunar New Year and Spring Festival Celebration Month."
“Our province is home to a mosaic of cultures, and the introduction of the Lunar New Year Act is a testament to our commitment to fostering inclusivity and acknowledging the vibrant cultures that shape the identity of our province," said Yao.
“This legislation is a step towards recognizing the cultural heritage of our Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and other communities who have played a crucial role in the development and prosperity of British Columbia.”
The proposed Lunar New Year Act defines Lunar New Year as either "the date of the second new moon following the winter solstice" or, in the case of intervention from an intercalary month, "the date of the third new moon following the winter solstice."
