Richmond police say Shing Wai Wong has been arrested for alleged fraud offences.

A 20-year-old man with an outstanding warrant for fraud charges has been arrested, according to Richmond RCMP.

RCMP put out an appeal for information about Shing Wai Wong on Dec. 11 after arresting two other people for an alleged scheme of buying high-end cars with forged bank drafts and fake IDs.

Wong was wanted on multiple charges, including fraud over $5,000 and an identity document offence.

Richmond RCMP Economic Crime Unit initiated an investigation in January 2024 into the alleged scheme to buy high-value vehicles, including BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Audi models, valued between $33,000 and $103,000, from private sellers on online sale platforms.

The total estimated loss to victims allegedly exceeded $850,000.

In April, Richmond RCMP Economic Crime Unit obtained search warrants for two properties and arrested two individuals, including Wong who was then released pending further investigation.

On Oct. 23, charges were laid against three suspects in the alleged scheme, which allegedly targeted automotive businesses and individuals in the Lower Mainland.

Two of the three individuals, Ka Tin Hong and Pui Hei Chu, were arrested at that time but Wong was at large.

Wong is scheduled to appear in Vancouver Provincial Court on Monday afternoon, Feb. 10, for a bail hearing.

In November, Richmond RCMP said they had successfully recovered 10 out of 16 vehicles, with eight returned to their owners and two still subject to legal proceedings.
