A man with a bizarre story about having his watch stolen said he didn't expect a visit to Richmond earlier this week to cost him $45,000.
Changqing Yu, from Vancouver, told the Richmond News he had just parked his car at 6111 No. 3 Rd., in a lot in front of the Asian restaurant Tian Shi fu, at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Yu said he had just gotten out of his car when a couple, sitting in a vehicle, began talking to him.
"They were asking me questions in English, but I didn't understand what they wanted from me," said Yu in Mandarin, explaining that he doesn’t speak English.
"I walked closer to their vehicle and replied to them in Mandarin, saying 'I don't know what you are talking about,' but when I got close the lady in the passenger seat grabbed my hand tightly and tried to put a necklace in my hand. I told her, 'No, I don't want that.’”
The lady continued to hold onto his hand and began pulling him closer, explained Yu.
“My mind went completely blank at that moment and the next thing I realized my $45,000 Rolex was being slipped off my wrist. The man in the driver’s seat quickly stepped on the gas and they fled,” said Yu.
Yu repeatedly told the News he never expected something like this to happen -- especially in broad daylight.
The RCMP have confirmed that Yu has reported the incident, however they could not verify any of the details.
The situation is being looked into, said Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang, but no details could be revealed.
The police still need to do more investigation to see if there is any merit to the claim, Hwang added.
