Adorable puppies, cats and rabbits are looking for their fur-ever homes, and what better time to give them one than National Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet Day?
Richmond’s BC SPCA location is holding a massive adoption event to encourage community members to choose adoption from now until Sunday, April 30. All adoptions are 50 per cent off, and special surprises are also in place for visitors.
A total of 18 dogs, four cats and two rabbits will be up for adoption, including long-term residents such as Sidney.
Sidney is a one-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd and was taken into BC SPCA’s care as a stray more than a month ago.
“We didn’t have too much information about her, but right away, she was just a total sweetheart and she’s a staff favourite,” said Richmond Animal Shelter assistant manager Emma Michel.
Also up for adoption are Peppers, a six-year-old black and white corgi and chihuahua mix who was surrendered yesterday and is still feeling nervous, and Esco, a 7-month-old brindle cane corso puppy looking for a family who can match his high energy.
The two rabbits, Rocky and Pixel, are bonded Flemish giants who are looking for a home with plenty of space for the two of them to run around and do zoomies.
Visitors will also get to meet Layne, a five-year-old grey and white domestic short hair who is looking for a family able to give him lots of calm and loving attention. Layne has been at the Richmond shelter for the longest time at two months, and he is currently on a behaviour plan to learn proper manners.
Although Layne is not quite ready for adoption at this time, anyone interested in bringing him home is welcome to visit him a few times before bringing him home.
Long-term residents in need of forever homes
This weekend is especially important for long-term residents who have been in the shelter for as long as two months, as time is of the essence for them to find new homes.
“As nice as the shelter is, and we try to make it as loving as we can, it’s still really stressful. And they’re alone all night,” Michel explained.
“So it’s just really, really important for them to find their forever home because we want them to know what that’s like to have a happy, loving home.”
As for those who wish to meet the 11 yellow Labrador retrievers and their mother that were recently surrendered by a breeder from Surrey, they will only be available on Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. Only in-person applications will be accepted.
“We’re really hoping to find all of them really good homes, and I know the public has been super excited and really want to meet (the puppies) and see what it’s all about. So we’re excited for that,” said Michel.
Richmond Animal Shelter is open to the public from 12 to 4 p.m. throughout this weekend. To find out more about the furry residents up for adoption in Richmond, visit the BC SPCA website.
