Minoru Park’s new artificial, combined baseball and soccer field is ready for action.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie will unveil the field in a ceremony on Saturday morning.
The field’s changes are largely a result of the park losing green space to accommodate a new $80 million swimming pool and seniors centre at the south end of Minoru Park.
The city reconfigured an existing baseball field to accommodate soccer, as well as lacrosse, and installed artificial turf at the same time.
There were also lighting upgrades, as well.
Representatives from soccer, baseball, field hockey, field lacrosse, cricket, and track and field clubs provided input into the design of these new fields, according to the city.
The artificial turf provides easier maintenance for the city parks department and affords athletes year-round access.
Various other changes have been made to the park. The city built a 32-stall parking lot on Gilbert Road, and a new east-west pedestrian pathway, relocated two tennis courts and improved fields for sports such as discus, shot put, hammer throw and javelin.
All of the projects cost $6.3 million, according to the city.
