Metro Vancouver Transit Police handed more than 10 bus lane violation tickets to Richmond drivers in one day.

On June 27, 11 Richmond drivers received a fine of $109 each for illegally driving in the bus lane at the Steveston Highway on and off-ramp to Highway 99 southbound.

These tickets were issued by transit police's Targeted Mobile Enforcement Team (TMET) as part of a four-day bus lane project where officers focused on motorists improperly using bus lanes to bypass traffic congestion.

"We received a wide range of responses from the public and focused our efforts on areas that were the most commonly mentioned," said Cst. Amanda Steed, spokesperson for Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

During the four days of enforcement, 268 bus lane violation tickets were issued in Richmond, Pitt Meadows, Delta, Surrey and Vancouver as follows:

  • Day 1 (Surrey, Delta): 89 violation tickets
  • Day 2 (Vancouver): 93 violation tickets
  • Day 3 (Vancouver): 118 violations tickets
  • Day 4 (Richmond, Pitt Meadows): 34 violations tickets

In addition to the bus lane violation tickets, 66 tickets for other violations were issued, including using electronic devices, not having their driver's license or insurance, speeding, and not displaying an N sign.

Officers also took two impaired drivers off the road on the first day.

“The results of this 4-day project highlight that public safety on and around the transit system is at the heart of TMET’s various enforcement activities," said Sgt. Steve Newton, spokesperson for TMET

"In addition to keeping transit vehicles moving, safety is always a goal when we enforce proper use of bus lanes."

Drivers should note bus lanes are marked with a "diamond" shape on a road sign or on the road itself. These markings can also indicate HOV lanes, but not always.

Electric vehicles can use some HOV lanes but are not allowed in bus lanes.
