Creators and producers in B.C.’s film industry now have access to a new government funding during the pandemic.
The Domestic Motion Picture Fund, a $2 million investment by the provincial government, is part of the COVID-19 Action Plan to help with local content creation.
The fund will help B.C.’s domestic film industry create new content while helping workers in the industry “get back on set,” according to B.C. Premier John Horgan in a media statement.
Production companies in B.C. can apply for the funds to help with development and production needs during a project. This includes researching, scriptwriting, securing locations and renting equipment.
The last time B.C.’s domestic motion picture sector received funding to help with the production phase of content creation was in 2003, according to the statement.
“We want to see more made-in-B.C. content on our screens,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
“This fund will create local jobs, support a more resilient motion picture industry and allow local producers to better compete with national and international productions.”
Funds from the new program will be administered by Creative BC, a non-profit society supporting the province’s television, film, music, and interactive digital media industries, as part of Real Focus BC – a suite of supports for the domestic production sector.
