A new, independent eatery is set to open up in Steveston Village.
The Aloha Hawaiian Grill has announced that it will be opening soon on Bayview Street, next to Blenz coffee shop.
The unit was only taken over a year or so ago by Korean fried chicken chain Chicko Chicken, which closed the location last fall for family reasons, according to its Facebook page.
Aloha appears to be the only one of its name in the region, although there are many of similar ilk in Washington State and across the U.S.
The Steveston Hawaiian location does boast a relatively unique menu for the village, with shaved ice coming in a plethora of flavours, as well as an “Aloha Plate” lunch, “Huli Huli Chicken,” “Maui Ribs” and “Loco Moco,” which is a “beef patty served with house mushroom gravy and topped with a fried egg,” according to the menu.
One of the new owners, Isabel Angeles, told the Richmond News that they are aiming for a soft opening in May and a grand opening in June, but couldn't commit to a firm date as they are going through some minor renovations.
Angeles said, although she's not from Hawaii, she has family there and visits frequently. She noted a gap in the market here for Hawaiian food and wanted to "bring some of Island grindz (Hawaiian slang for food) here, since we miss it so much."
